As temperatures are cooling down, new beauty trends are heating up.
is staying up-to-date on all of the cutting-edge styles expected to make an appearance in the Fall of 2020.

“The Money Piece” hair coloring technique is growing in popularity. This face-framing highlight is brightening yet warm and typically ranges from carmel to deep-blonde in color. While traditional highlights are distributed throughout a full head of hair, “The Money Piece” is reserved for the pieces of hair surrounding the face. For those that are ready for a hair-lightening change this season but still want to stick with a warmer color palette, “The Money Piece,” might be the golden look for you this Fall.

In the spirit of preparing their hair for the cooler months, many are also having keratin treatments done to infuse strength and shine back into their hair. Keratin is a protein naturally found in all hair. However, sun exposure, chlorine, salt, and other chemicals and activities can strip keratin from the hair over time. At the end of a long summer, many are choosing to restore this keratin back into their hair with the help of hair care professionals. Keratin treatments are beneficial to all hair types, so if your hair seems dull and frizzy from too much fun-in-the-sun, it might be a good idea to schedule an appointment with a licensed professional to treat your hair with its own keratin spa day.

Brick-red lip and nail products are also in vogue this Fall, especially when paired with natural eye-make-up. This red strays away from the traditionally vivid, cherry-red, and is brownish in tone. The warmth and depth of this red make it the perfect shade for crisp autumn days.

The cosmetic development that has grown the most rapidly in popularity in recent months is eyelash extensions. While this technique must be done by a licensed specialist to ensure safety and quality, eyelash extensions have become a game-changer for many this year. Not only are they completely safe when done by a professional, but they are also taking the place of mascara. Waking up with long, silk, natural-looking lashes each morning means one less step in your beauty routine.

Extensions are only one lash trend entering the scene this Fall. Eyelash perming and tinting are also on the rise. Not to be confused with hair-perming, eyelash perming is a much more delicate procedure that acts more as a “lash-lift.” Tinting can be very beneficial for those who have naturally blonde or fair eyelashes and want their eyes to pop a bit more without the application of mascara.

In summation, if you’re considering a seasonal makeover that will make a statement while also staying true to the current trends, replenish your locks with a keratin treatment, brighten-up your face with “The Money Piece,” put on the color of Fall with a brick-red lip and nail, and meet with a trusted professional that can enhance your eyes with beautiful, silk lashes. Fall is going to look stunning on you.

Holiday parties, family get-togethers, nights out with friends… whew. December gets busy! Need some quick advice on what’s hot and what’s not this season? No problem! Ģýs is here to get you through the festivities in style.

Let’s start with the crown jewel, shall we? We asked Empire’s Education Team what hair styles are going to turn heads this holiday season!

Michael Rodinelli, Education Support Manager for Ģýs in Louisville, Kentucky says get ready to rock those braids.

“Lots of loose, soft braiding is on trend right now.” Says Rodinelli. “Keep those up do’s low at the occipital area of the head for an effortless looking design.”

Not sure where the occipital area is? We’ve got you covered:

Vector Illustration Of Human skull lateral view with explanation

Loose is key for the season, but if you want to skip the braid, Empire’s Althea Hosler of Northeastern Pennsylvania says there’s a way to make a simple loose bun look ah-mazing!

“A low, loose bun in a relatively easy way to achieve a polished look.” says Hosler. “My favorite trick is adding a few sparkly pins or barrettes to make the style really stand out.”

“Don’t forget to pull a few pieces out to frame the face.” Says Tammy O’Neill, Senior Director of Educational Services. “Effortless and fun is the look that’s in. By pulling those face framing pieces you’ll soften the entire look into a cohesive style.”

Alright… we’ve got this hair thing down! But what about nails? You guessed it. The bling shouldn’t just be on your barrette this year.

“Dipped nails are a great way to get a long lasting manicure without the need for UV light that gel requires.” says Rodinelli. “Many nail salons offer dip services, but there are also home kits you can purchase.” So what is the hot color of the season? “Sparkles. LOTS of sparkles!”

Would it even be the holidays without sparkles? Hosler agrees they are KEY. But she prefers a slightly more subtle take on the trend.

“A nude color nail with sparkles added for embellishment will carry you through several weeks of events.” she says. “If you have multiple parties, particularly in a short amount of time, this look will go well with whatever you choose to wear.”

Hair, Nails and… makeup. Arguably the most subjective in terms of style, there are still a few standard rules to follow when glamming up for a night out.

“It’s in the fine details.” says Rodinelli. “Really take your time and be detailed in your work when applying your products. You’ll likely be wearing more make up than usual, so making sure you blend and pay attention to details. Heavier than normal eye liner will give you that extra umph you’re looking for.”

“Don’t be afraid of more sparkles!” says Hosler. “Heavier eye makeup will give you a dramatic look. Adding sparkle liner will make it pop even more! You can also do a nude eye, and go with a red sparkle lip for a different take.”

“It’s easy to go too far with holiday make up.” says O’Neill. “However, a good trick is to stick to one color palette without being too matchy matchy.”

And, O’Neill says distributing color evenly throughout your entire look will help pull it all together.

“Putting color evenly between accessories like jewelry, shoes and/or purse is key. Then match your lipstick or your eye shadow to that item.”

There’s Still Time for Summer Hairstyle Fun!

There’s something about summer that screams excitement. You can feel activity in the air as more people are out and about, laughing and smiling. The weather is hot, the fashions are cool, and stylish sun lovers among us crave a carefree hairstyle to embrace the vibe. Summer remains busy with fun in the sun- we just can’t get enough of it! To keep us looking good while temperatures rise in the dog days of summer, find simple styles that hold up in heat and humidity. Need help? Check out these sizzling hair looks that salon experts still see as the best-tressed end-of-season styles:

Beat Summer Heat with Cool Cuts and Styles

Braids

Created by Student: @britni_tyler from our Empire Portage Campus. ⁣

Braids are the go-to style for the season of heat. You can dress them up, dress them down, wear them loose and casual, or tight and formal. Add accessories to their twisty allure, like summer flowers or sparkly clips and heads will turn! Swim and play in them too. Favorites include the messy side braid, crown braids, waterfall, box braids, and super-cute space bun braids. See this braiding tutorial here for .

Modern Shag Cuts.

Wash and go with minimal effort and still look great with this trend. Worn straight or wavy, it’s a winner this season. , celebrity hairstylist, says “This cut looks great on pretty much everyone and most hair textures- especially if you’ve got a bit of natural wave or bend in your hair”. He recommends adding face-framing layers to make your features really pop.

Wispy Bangs.

Many of us love wearing , but let’s face it- they get heavy and flat or wild and frizzy in humidity. Lose the weight by adding texture during the summer months. This style eases our styling pain by being less blunt and more piecey. Plus, these lash-skimming bangs focus on your pretty eyes and look totally flirty!

Curly Bangs.

What better time than summer to embrace that natural wave you were blessed with. To get it right, find a stylist who specializes in dry cutting. Celeb hairstylist and Dove curl expert Cynthia Alvarez explains that this method helps to determine where bangs will best frame the face and how curls act in their natural state.

Bobs and Lobs.

This cut isn’t going away but instead evolves for each season. For summer, the idea is ease of styling. Try the Collarbone Lob, cut at a length that’s universally flattering. Blunt ends grazing the collarbone keeps hair lightweight. Rounded Bobs remain a classic and super-cute in summer. Curly Lobs and Wavy Bobs are stylish looks for women with natural curls. Textured Bobs are light and loose and hold up in humid weather.

Hot Summer Haircolor Ideas You’ll Love

Make classics more fun and trend cuts extra-edgy with these summer-into-fall hair color ideas, which are vivid and playful this year.

Blue Tips.

The color of water and sky is super summer-friendly, so it makes sense to take the plunge toward blue hair. Bring out your inner mermaid with blue tips just on the ends and add waves for emphasis. You’ll be the coolest girl on the beach!

Pastel Pink.

As a highlight or an all-over hue, get the vibe of pink sands with this flattering shade. Angelic looking on blondes, pink is a bit tricky on dark hair but can be done. Ask your colorist for a deep pink or rose shade with plenty of pigment to complement the dark base.

Pale Peach/Gold.

Credit : @bescene

Pretty in peach? Yes, please! There are so , from rose to copper to gold, that you can surely pick a peach just right for your complexion and base color.

Copper Ribbons.

Credit:
https://www.allthingshair.com/en-us/hairstyles-haircuts/highlights/copper-highlights/

Summer isn’t just for blondes- let brunettes shine on with shimmery copper highlights. Keep hair healthy while getting your glow on by placing this tone creatively on select strands. It’s an intriguing look that catches the light in all the right places.

Face Framing Hues.

Play it safe but still look chic with face-framing highlights. This classic beach babe look is always in style because it’s easy and can work on any hair type. Dark-haired manes should ask their stylist which shade will lift without turning orange. Perhaps shimmering copper or a golden glow would be best. They’re the colors of sunshine, after all!

After months of unfortunate weather, the sun is smiling down on us and summer is on its way.

Now is the perfect time for Summer Fashion Scopes! Let’s look to the stars for fashion inspiration:

Aries – Aries personality is well matched by bright primary colors. Ultra Violet and Hot Orange make a bold statement, which is perfect for the fieriest of fire signs.

Taurus – No one likes practical luxury more than earthy Taurus, and this season’s chunky heeled sandal is the perfect shoe for this sign’s elegant strength. For a little fun, try a metallic or funky print.

Gemini – Gemini is known for its duality, which is why edgy sportswear is perfect for the twins this season. Don’t be afraid to wear joggers and a little white tank with a strand of pearls and sky-high heels.

Cancer: An easy floral mini-dress is perfect for the romantic and nurturing Cancer. Add an armful of silver bangles and dangling silver earrings, and you will be on trend with the essence of your star-sign.

Leo: The lion loves drama, and nothing is more dramatic than fringe embellishment. Fringe has gone from boho to roaring 20’s this season, and no one can pull this diva look off quite like a Leo.

Virgo: Puff sleeved blouses are perfect for Virgo’s crisp femininity. These tops look best for this practically perfect earth sign when they are constructed of structured fabrics like starched cotton.

Libra: Libras are about beauty and balance, and a perfectly tailored suit in an unexpected print will tip the scales toward fashion. If the weather and your style are at odds, add a starched men’s shirt to a cute flowery skirt to beat the heat.

Scorpio: If there is one sign that isn’t afraid of shoulder pads, it is the scorpion. Lucky for them, 80’s silhouettes are back. If you are not quite ready for an all-out Dynasty moment, consider a pair of spiky shoes, or a pair of high waisted denim shorts paired with your favorite 80’s band tour shirt.

Sagittarius: Sunny optimism is the hallmark of the Sagittarius, which makes this season’s must-have canary yellow perfect for the zodiac’s archer. You will hit the fashion mark with a breezy yellow dress or bright accessories.

Capricorn: Fashion and function is the battle cry of the Capricorn, and the summer’s must-have raincoat fits in well with this strong aesthetic. Whimsical vinyl coats in transparent neon colors and crazy prints will keep you dry and in style during summer storms.

Aquarius – The water bearer is perfectly suited for the glorious tropical prints of the season. These flowery, bright, expressive prints are a reflection of your free-spirited and imagination.

Pisces: Pisces will take to pastels like a…well…you get it. While brights are hot, pastels are still having a moment. Watery pastels like blue and green are perfect for your creative, romantic spirit, and it seems that lilac maybe the next “it” color.

NOTE TO ALL SIGNS – You may start to hear about “bum bags.” They are trying to fool you. Bum Bags are fanny packs. They are really, really expensive fanny packs.
Please note, these horoscopes are for entertainment purposes, not scientific, and kind of made up. But have some fun this summer! Try something new. Look for inspiration everywhere, and let’s try and be kind to ourselves and to others.

While beauty professionals drive fashion, these days, social media is where a look really takes flight. Influencers can make or break a trend, and sometimes take the idea to a whole different level.

Here are the TOP 5 beauty trends influencers are rocking this spring:

1.) Scrunchies

This once maligned hair accessory is finding its renaissance on Instagram.  #scrunchie has over 72,000 posts and influencers like Caitlin Patton () have been spotted wearing scrunchies in a girly, yet sophisticated way. The bonus? Scrunchies are extra gentle on hair and keep your hair waves from being wrecked.

2.) Drunk Blush

Yes, it could have a better name, but the serious flush some people get after drinking too much prosecco is the trend for blush this spring and summer. This look is achieved with a touch of cream blush on the apples of cheeks blended out with powder.  For a great example of this, check out Aryanna Epperson’s Insta (.)

3.) Yellow

Social media looks quite sunny these days with bright yellow eclipsing millennial pink.  This color looks to be huge for prom as well as nail art, and #yellow has over 31 million posts on Instagram. This color may be tricky to pull off, but it can seriously brighten the dreary spring most parts of the country have been having.

4.) Freckles

#Freckles has over 2 million posts, and it is growing. The natural foundation that allows your true skin show is hot right now. Once considered a “flaw” they are now being rightly celebrated. No freckles? No problem! There are tons of tutorials on how to fake these adorable little spots.

5.) Blue Eyeliner

Blue cat eye eyeliner is everywhere on Instagram. Even celebrities like Bella Thorne have been sporting this edgy, but easy look.  Swap out your sleek black cat eye for something little more electric.

So, now I want to hear from you! What looks will you be rocking this spring? Do you have a great Instagram account? Let us know!! If you want to see some great future influencers visit  to see how Ģý students are pursuing their dreams.

Winter is over, and it is the best season of all: SANDAL SEASON. Now, sandals aren’t always appropriate for every work environment (like the salon…never wear sandals in the salon), but they are great for hot summer nights and lazy spring days.

Here are the hottest trends in sandals for the upcoming fashion warm-up:

Strappy Sandals

Was there a time when strappy sandals weren’t on trend? This year, however, the term “strap” gets literal.  Designers like Sakai and Altuzarra went a little more industrial with the term by using actual rope.  Never fear, delicate, classic looks will never go away, but there is room to be bold and experiment.

White

The saying goes, “ No white shoes after Labor Day.”  You can ignore that, because white sandals are hot for spring, and white is going to be hot for the rest of 2018.  Designers like Louis Vuitton and Valentino showed fierce, futuristic, white shoe styles, and it is really important to follow their lead.  White sandals can go toddler or grandma really quick, so keep it fresh!

Silver

Stack heeled silver sandals are the most perfect shoe of the summer.  Silver is a neutral that can work with casual, dressy, or fashion-forward outfits.  Even silver flip-flops can make a trip to the grocery store feel like a stomp down the runway.

Mules

When you want simple elegance, slide into a mule.  These sandals are a throwback to 90’s style and are a little more buttoned up than other summer shoe options.  Mules are also great for the transition between late summer and early fall.

Floral Prints

Do not be afraid of prints this season. Bold floral shoes can be a show-stopping fashion accessory when added to a monochromatic outfit.  Also, don’t be afraid to mix patterns. Florals and stripes look surprisingly modern and chic together when carefully matched for color and size.  And remember, if it doesn’t go with anything…it goes with everything.

Just a reminder: With great sandals comes great responsibility. Make sure post winter toes don’t ruin your look.

Stop by an Ģý and give your feet some pampering with a pedicure!

The Oscars are Hollywood’s biggest night, but they are also the unofficial start of prom season! The red carpet was one of the most fashionable on record and provided lots of inspiration for great prom looks.

Here are some of the hottest formal wear trends from the Academy Awards:

Metallics – Lupita Nyong’o, Gal Gadot, and Jennifer Lawrence took a cue from their superhero alter ego’s and donned dazzling metallic gowns.  Gadot was a wonder in gunmetal, while Lupita and Jennifer were marvels in gold.  This look is easily duplicated, but keep your lines sleek and your accessories minimal. Metallic colored gowns are a lot of looks.  Simplicity is key to looking your best.

White – Danae Gurira and Margot Robie stunned with white column dresses.  While undeniably chic and on trend, white is a tricky look to pull off for a formal.  Too much embellishment can send you into bridal territory, so keep the dress simple and let your hair and makeup do the talking. White also lends itself to bold accessories, so go all out with your jewelry!

Brights – Nicole Kidman and Viola Davis were standouts in their bold and bright colored gowns.  Hues like electric blue, hot pink, and canary yellow were hot this year and are destined to be prom gown favorites. Don’t be afraid to stop traffic because formal is a time for you to stand out.  Just make sure your dress is a color that flatters your skin tone.

Romantic – Salma Hayek and Emily Blount brought some Jane Austen to the evening in their pastel, ruffled, feminine looks. These looks are perfect for prom, but make sure they don’t overwhelm you. One romantic detail is more flattering than trying to wear the entire trend at once. Thing can go “ late 70’s prom” rather quickly. Keep it soft, beautiful, and modern.

Zendaya – Did you see that dress? It was chocolate brown, off the shoulder, and retro while still being modern. Zendaya’s dress is its own trend.  While fashion can be fun, look for styles that suit your personality, and don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Even Emma Stone opted for a beautiful menswear set that looked just as right on the red carpet as any ball gown.

So, have you picked out your formal gown yet? What about your hair and nails? Stop by an Ģý today and let them treat you to some services to get you ready for your big night.

What a winter we have had! Record low temps, sleet, snow, and freezing rain punished much of the nation. Everybody is ready for sunny days, flowers, and fresh air.

While it is a little early to break out the warm weather gear, you can put a little “Spring” in your look with next season’s must-have accessories.

Here are the top five ways to accessorize for Spring 2018:

1.) Swing from the Chandeliers – That’s right, chandelier earrings are back. Forget about subtle and delicate, this time around, these earrings are bigger and have more sparkle than ever. Both Yves Saint Laurent and Dolce and Gabbana showed shoulder grazing rhinestone stunners. With this fashion trend, more is more. Don’t be afraid to add a rhinestone headband or choker and be the queen of all you survey.

2.) Have a Blast with Bags – This year, “ it” bags kind of look like fourth-grade art projects.  Statements bags are back and they are bold, whimsical, and daring. Even the iconic Prada bags are splashed with flowers and graffiti prints. Remember, if it doesn’t go with anything, it goes with everything. Don’t be afraid to get a little loud with your look!

3.) Wear Boots Made for Walking – I know your toes have been stuck inside a boot all winter, but this spring, boots are still the hot style. Unlike their stuffy winter counterparts, low-heeled boots for warmer temps are more structural, colorful, and heavily embellished. For an extra level of chic, add must-have fishnet ankle socks.

4.) Make It Clear – While Ultra Violet is Pantone’s Color of the Year; transparent is the thing for spring. Designers used transparent plastics to make shoes, belts, purses, jewelry, and trenches.  Who knew that your junior high backpack would take on a fashionable new life?

5.) Belt It Out –The hottest, and easiest, trend to embrace is the belt. From corsets to scarves tied around the waist, the belted silhouette was all over the Spring 2018 runways. Belts are also a great way to refresh a wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Accessories are a fun, inexpensive way to update your look. Trendy items can be found at any price point, and a great piece of jewelry or a new bag can make basic pieces look modern and fresh.

If you still need a little “ pick me up” stop by Ģý for a manicure or pedicure in the hottest spring colors!

As a cosmetologist I can honestly tell you that one of the most popular questions I am asked is “How often should I color my hair?” This question always makes me respond with another question: “How often do you WANT to color your hair?” There are no set rules of how often you can do something or not do something in the world of beauty. You can do what you like, as often as you like as no one can stop you. However, there are some guidelines that I strongly suggest to follow when dealing with chemicals and your locks.

First, understand why this is a loaded question for cosmetologists. There are so many different types of color to choose from, and there are many different techniques that can be done. Each has its own time frame of when it will need to be retouched. For example, there are temporary colors, which as their name implies are not meant to last in the hair very long, and would require frequent coloring for upkeep. Permanent hair color PERMANENTLY changes the pigment in each one of your individual hair strands, and therefore will never actually leave the hair. New hair will grow from your scalp and that will need to be colored if you want to keep a uniform look.

Let’s also think about different types of color clients, because depending on what type of customer you are will also determine how often you should color your hair. For example, if a guest’s main concern with their hair color is grey or white coverage, depending on how fast their hair grows will normally determine how often he or she may need to come back to get a touch up. Now, you might be saying, yes, yes, I understand all of that, but what about when there is a mistake made?

Ah, yes, we have all been there. We decide to try something new and we end up standing in front of the mirror desperately trying to not scream at the top of our lungs while we hold back tears. So, you have a dreadful color and you need it fixed as soon as possible. So…how long do I need to wait before getting it fixed?

I’m sorry my friends, but there is no one answer for that scenario. There are several things to take into consideration. What chemical process has your hair been through? For example, it’s much easier to change a color on someone who has only had one process done, rather than someone who has had their hair bleached twice and then toned. Sometimes it’s not about what you want. Sometimes it about what your hair can handle.

At the end of the day a great cosmetologist wants to make you happy. Happy with the services they have provided, but also with their talents and techniques.

Don’t be afraid to talk to your stylist. Ask them questions and listen to their answers, especially when dealing in the world of color.  Understand that one of our main concerns is the integrity of your hair. This may mean that we will have to say no to you once and a while, and believe me it’s always in your hair’s best interest.

I know some of us are still basking in the summer sun (use sunblock), but now is the time to turn our attention to the most stylish time of the year…fall. Fall is the best season for fashion and beauty, and the 2017 season promises to be absolutely inspiring!

Here are the trends that are going to be hot for the cooler season:

Red

Not maroon, not rust, not Marsala (we are STILL not over that Pantone), but bold red is the hue of the moment. This fall the ultimate power color will be on lips, tips, toes, shoes, shirts, and anywhere else you can imagine. In fact, monochrome red looks to be the hottest statement style of the year.

Tip – There is a bold red out there for everyone. When it comes to lipstick and shirts, pick a red with an undertone that suits your skin. If you aren’t sure what your undertone is, ask a beauty professional to help you out!

Glitter Boots

Footwear goes full-on Disco this season. This surprisingly versatile accessory can take a day look into the stratosphere and make a night look positively intergalactic. Designers showed glitter boots with everything from jeans and a t-shirt to a ladylike black dress.

Tip – If glitter boots aren’t for you, glitter lips will be a huge beauty trend. Major cosmetic lines are launching or re-launching their most dazzling lip-glosses. While matte lipstick isn’t going away anytime soon, sometimes you just need a little sparkle.

Fringe and Feathers

Fall fashion is bold, and there is nothing bolder than adding movement to your look. Feathers and fringe graced the runways on everything from evening gowns to backpacks. While these trendy embellishments could be a work hazard, they are a great way to add some Hollywood Glamour to club and evening looks.

Tip – You may not want to wear a feather boa (or you do and it isn’t practical), but a feathered hair clip or a fringed bag is a great way to keep on trend!

The Blowout

The blowout is back everybody! Big hair that is full of volume and bounce dominated the Badgley Mishka show. While loose, deconstructed waves were still hot, this beautiful hairstyle reminded us why it keeps coming back in fashion. Paired with bright red lipstick, the blowout takes the bombshell look to a whole new level of beauty!

Tip – Get a professional blowout! Stop by an Ģý and let our students give you the hottest look of the season. We will be glad to give you tips, tricks, and product recommendations to help you recreate the look at home.

Fall fashion, hair, and makeup look to be fun, and autumn is the perfect time to let go of preconceived notions of what you can or can’t do. Take a chance on a new look! Take a chance on a new lipstick or hairstyle. Take a chance on a new color you’ve never worn before.

Take a chance on you!

Everyone has a go-to style – even if it’s just what they wake with in the morning. But, we think a little forethought goes a long way… especially if you have a round face. Otherwise, you run the risk of your hair looking as though it’s been plastered to your head.

Short on time? You may want to take a look at these suggestions. Each one is perfect for gals with round faces.

On the Short Side

Pixies flatter round faces. But, if they’re not your favorite style, consider this:  try adding layers to your cut. The angles complement rounded cheeks, almost finishing them off perfectly and adding more definition to the cheek bones.

Angled Bobs and Lobs

If you’re after longer hair, you may want to try a bob – with or without bangs. The catch here is to keep the cut angled where you can. An angled bob is an incredible face-slimmer.

Side-Swept Bangs

When you can’t imagine life without bangs, you do want to stay away from a flat, straight line trim. It will widen your face instantly. Instead, go for a side fringe. And, the longer… the better.

To the Side… Almost Always

In fact, women with round faces want to steer clear of center parts whenever they can. Any cut that can get pushed to the side will look incredible.  It can be as long or as short as you like it.

Need help figuring out what type of face shape you have and what would be the best style, one of our local student salons.
