Jose Navarro, a student at in Standale, Michigan, recently earned national recognition after winning the Sport Clips Battle of the Hair competition. As one of only six finalists selected across the country, Jose attended the Sport Clips National Huddle in Kentucky and received a $5,000 scholarship.

Watch the official video announcement .

At just 19 years old, Jose’s journey into the beauty industry reflects dedication, resilience, and passion. Raised in a large family with five siblings, Jose faced challenges early in life, including the loss of his father at age 10. His story is one of perseverance, from humble beginnings in Mexico to achieving national success in the United States.

A Passion for Barbering and Hair Design

Jose was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and spent much of his childhood in Mexico before returning to Michigan at age 12. His interest in barbering began at a young age.

At 16, he started learning through an online haircutting course. While visiting Mexico, he took a hands-on class to continue building his skills. When he came back home, he practiced by cutting his four brothers’ hair.

After graduating high school, Jose took a year to think about his future before enrolling at Ģý in Standale in November 2025.

“It’s been a great time. I’ve learn so much more than cutting hair. I really enjoy it,” he said.

Competing in the Sport Clips Battle of the Hair

Jose heard about the competition from his educators at Ģý, who encouraged students to apply for the scholarship opportunity.

There were no excuses not to do it. No hesitation. It’s something I love to do,” he said.

To enter, students submitted before-and-after haircut photos. From there, six finalists were selected to attend the Sport Clips National Huddle in Kentucky.

“I was excited not only for the scholarship but also to be competing with people from across the country. I had so much excitement. The scholarship would help me so much,” Jose said.

At the event, Jose’s talent and dedication stood out, earning him a spot as one of the national winners.

“The trip was such a beautiful experience. Since I was little, I wanted to be in the industry. Being on a stage like that at such a young age opened my eyes to the opportunities this industry can bring,” he said.

“It was such a great experience. I was so excited to hear my name being called and so grateful.”

Support from Ģý

Ģý in Standale, MI Executive Director Megan shared this about Jose:

“Jose started school with us back in November, and from day one, he has always walked in with a smile on his face and greeted everyone with a warm hello. He truly brightens every room he enters. Jose has a heart of gold and is incredibly thankful for this opportunity. When he found out he had won his trip to Kentucky, he immediately called his mom and became emotional. He was determined to bring home the scholarship, and his hard work and dedication paid off. Jose is committed to his education and loves learning new things every day. He has big goals for his future, and we are so thankful to have him as part of our school family.”

Standale Educator Kena, who accompanied Jose to the National Sports Clips Huddle in Louisville, Kentucky, also shared her experience working with him:

“I was so honored to be chosen to attend the National Sports Clips Huddle in Louisville, Kentucky, with Jose. I was so proud and excited when he was chosen as a finalist, and even more proud when he won. He stood out amongst the other finalists, and there was no doubt in my mind that the title would be his. Not only is Jose kind, caring, and God-fearing, he is also considerate. There is never a day that goes by when Jose isn’t smiling, but he is also a lot of fun to be around. It has been an absolute honor to be his educator.”

Jose credits his success to the support system around him, including his instructors, classmates, friends, and family.

Future Goals in the Beauty Industry

After graduating, Jose plans to continue his education and pursue his educator license. He hopes to inspire others and give back to the next generation of beauty professionals.

“I love cutting hair and I never want to stop. There is much to learn, but I know I can help others with what I know,” he said.

During the competition, he also connected with industry professionals who motivated him to keep pushing forward.

“I met a lot of people on that trip that really inspired me, such as Kelly Cardenas. He inspired me to do bigger things in the industry. He assured me that even though I already accomplished something, there is a lot more to go for and to never settle,” Jose said.

Advice for Future Students

Jose encourages other students to take chances and put themselves out there.

“Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there because that’s the way people would get to know you. You might be a little afraid to meet people, but meeting people is going to get you to the places where you might one day dream of being. Your age doesn’t matter. You can always do it or try for it. Don’t hesitate to try again and again,” he said.

He also shared gratitude for those who supported him throughout his journey.

“I want to mention my friends, my instructors specifically Ms. Kena and Mr. Henry, Jacob Ortiz, and my fellow classmates. A special shoutout to God, who made it possible for me to be there. My family has always supported me in everything I do, especially my mom, Angelica, and my brothers.”

Stories like Jose’s highlight the real opportunities available to students at Ģý. With hands-on training, dedicated educators, and industry connections, students are prepared to turn their passion into a career. Ģý looks forward to supporting Jose as he continues to grow in the beauty industry.

At 76 years old, most people are slowing down. But for Carl Tennyson, a student in ’s Dixie campus Educator in Training program, life is full of momentum again. After decades as a celebrated platform artist and stylist to iconic names including Prince and B.B. King, Carl decided to return to school, proving that passion and purpose truly have no age limit. Carl began his program in September 2025 and will proudly graduate in February 2026.

Carl had been trying to return to school for years. When he learned he could complete his training in seven months if he stayed persistent, everything clicked. “When I realized I could do it if I kept coming to school, I got excited,” he shared. “I’m still learning, even in my 70s, and I want to keep learning.” He believes education is a lifelong process, and being both a learner and a teacher is part of what he loves most about this industry.

After returning to church post COVID-19, a stylist approached him about working in his salon and later invited him to give a demonstration at Ģý. “Everyone was excited that I came,” Carl said. “They wanted me to come back and do more classes. I told them to give me a job. I’ll get my teacher’s certification and teach.” That moment set his new chapter in motion and opened the door to a future teaching opportunity.

Carl’s career in beauty began after a major shift in his college years. Born and raised in Louisville, he graduated from Shawnee High School in 1969 and attended Morehead University and the University of Louisville, majoring in art with a minor in interior design. During his sophomore year, he followed his passion and enrolled in Jefferson State Vocational School of Cosmetology. After completing his apprenticeship under Lillian Couffure, he spent nearly eight years traveling the country with a chemical hair specialist. From there, his career accelerated quickly.

  • Served on the Bluegrass Hair Fashion Committee

Today, he continues to work behind the chair at Christian Care Communities, carrying on the legacy of Wanda Young while specializing in both male and female styling.

For Carl, the most rewarding part of coming to Empire is the opportunity to teach and inspire future stylists. “It’s a whole educational process,” he said. “I’m learning from them and they’re learning from me.” He believes every student deserves a strong, high-quality education. “Be the best you can be. Pay attention and have a desire to learn. If you’re not paying attention, this is the wrong field for you.”

Carl encourages students to keep seeking knowledge, remain motivated, and continue learning long after earning their cosmetology license. “I have great colleagues,” he said. “They motivate me. I needed this recharge and this motivation again.”

Ģý Cosmetology Student Tucson AZ Wins National Competition

Congratulations to Kasandra Olivera-Carlotta, a student at in Tucson, AZ, who has been awarded the AACS & L’Oréal Student Stylist of the Year – Best in Color! Kasandra was selected as one of only twelve finalists nationwide and traveled to the CEA Conference in Orlando to receive her award.

Tired of working a job she had no passion for, Kasandra decided it was time to chase her dreams. From collecting fashion magazines as a child to pursuing a hands-on education at Ģý, her path became clear: she was meant to be in the beauty industry.

With a natural competitive streak and a passion for creativity, Kasandra seized the opportunity to enter the national competition.

“I have always been a competitive person; I like to strive for more. My educator came to us one day about this contest, and I knew I had to do it. It took me three weeks to complete my look. I love the look of big, voluminous curls. I knew others would go for an Avant-garde look, so I decided to create a look that a regular, everyday person would ask for. Something very natural. This is a look that someone could ask for and want in the normal day-to-day. At the end of June, I received an email that stated I was one of twelve finalists for this contest. I was so surprised, it was a great feeling. I felt like my hard work meant something. I was so proud of myself,” shares Kasandra.

As a finalist, Kasandra experienced a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Orlando, where she met with the other finalists for the awards ceremony.

“It was absolutely surreal. I am very thankful for this opportunity. I was able to bring a friend with me, we stayed in Orlando and went to Disneyworld. It was such an unforgettable experience. I was able to meet other finalists and educators. They called the finalists on stage, and I was so excited. He announced my name as the winner, and it felt like everything happened so fast. I was shocked; it was surreal. I will always remember this,” shares Kasandra.

Lesha Neal, Executive Director at Ģý in Tucson, AZ, acknowledges Kasandra’s dedication and passion:

“Kasandra is an amazing young lady! She shows her passion and creativity in all that she does. She strives for satisfaction from her clients to give them the desired looks they request. Kasandra has a true gift and shares her love for the beauty industry with her fellow classmates, educators, clients and all around her. She is an excellent student nearing graduation and has put her all into everything she has learned. I am not surprised that she did so well for this contest, she worked hard and put her heart into this piece of work. I am so proud of her for this big win and we here in Tucson look forward to continuing watching Kasandra grow in this beautiful industry of Cosmetology.”

Reflecting on her time at Ģý, Kasandra highlights the hands-on learning environment that helped her feel confident and career-ready.

“I did not expect so much hands-on practice that we do at Empire. I chose Empire because on my tour I saw how everyone was working on something. There was music playing and people talking while being creative. I said this is where I want to go. As a student, there are always fun competitions and opportunities to work with people. My educators care about my future career and my education. I feel like I was able to learn so much from my educators. I genuinely feel ready to take on this career. Through Empire, it truly gets us ready to go out there.”

Along with the hands-on training, Kasandra expresses how the educators supported her throughout her journey.

“I want to give a shoutout to my educator, Annette Andree. She gave me the confidence for this competition, telling me to go for it. It was my creativity, but she kept telling me I could do it. I feel like she has always been there for me, telling me to do my best and believing in me.”

Ģý Cosmetology Student Tucson AZ Wins National Competition

After this experience, Kasandra grew confident in her craft and places no limit on her goals.

“I have always been a hard worker and believed that anything could be achieved through persistence and hard work. This experience showed me that I can be confident in my craft, and I can strive for more. It makes me feel optimistic about my future career. I feel like there is no limit to what you can achieve,” notes Kasandra.

If you’re ready to take your career to the next level, follow Kasandra’s advice.

“You can learn and take what you want from beauty school as much as you want. You can create and shape this career as you want to. All you have to do is try and go for it. Do things that make you uncomfortable. When you are confused and uncomfortable, that means you are learning and growing. Put yourself out there, especially by keeping up with social media. Keep trying your best. Do things that scare you. You won’t succeed at everything; you’re there to learn. Don’t be afraid to mess up and try again. Comfort is the enemy of success,” expresses Kasandra.

Kasandra, congratulations on this tremendous achievement! We are so proud of you for exploring your passion and pushing past your comfort zone. We are excited to see what your future holds.

Monica McGarry, a cosmetology graduate from Tucson, AZ, has been named one of six national winners of the 2025 Sports Clips Battle of the Hair Contest. As part of her victory, McGarry received an all-expenses-paid trip to San Antonio, TX to attend the Sport Clips National Huddle in May 2025.

McGarry’s journey into cosmetology was a calling years in the making. From experimenting with hair and makeup for her sister’s wedding to making the bold decision to enroll in beauty school, she followed her passion with determination.

One unforgettable day at school, she received the surprise of a lifetime while doing what she loved most- working on a client.

“I was coloring my client’s hair when I heard people looking for me. Miss Tracy comes over to me asking how my client was doing. I turned around and there they were with flowers and balloons telling me I won the Sports Clips Battle of the Hair competition. I was so excited. We took a bunch of pictures and they told me I was going to San Antonio, Texas. It was the best day,” said McGarry.

Ģý Tucson, AZ Cosmetology Graduate Sports Clips Mens Haircut Winner

McGarry was allowed to bring an educator with her to the event. She chose Renee Bowen, an educator at Empire Tucson, AZ.

“I chose my educator Renee because we immediately connected. I felt like every time I needed help, she really helped me. She’s so patient, kind, and she keeps it real. She pushes us to be better. That was helpful for me because she didn’t baby us. I feel like she is a very good person, and I needed someone I felt comfortable with. If I felt stressed, I could go to her.”

Bowen expressed how proud she was to be part of the experience, saying:

“I’ve had the pleasure of being Monica’s educator, as well as accompanying her on the trip of a lifetime—in the twenty years I’ve been a cosmetologist, I’ve yet to have such an adventure! Our trip was a great balance of fun, as well as educational. It still feels surreal I got to attend, as it was truly Monica’s hard work and dedication to her craft that got us there. If you ask her, she will more than likely have a demure response inferring that without her educator’s instruction, she wouldn’t have had the confidence; but that is Monica in a nutshell. A multifaceted young woman who is as genuine and humble as she is talented. And she is, in fact, very talented.”

In a full-circle moment, McGarry is now working with Sports Clips.

“I applied to Sports Clips and told them about the contest. The regional manager was excited and said she was looking for me at the Huddle event. They were so welcoming and they have ongoing education programs. They were open to me being there and working right away. They let me come in to shadow people doing haircuts. They even let me go to different locations to watch people do different haircuts and pick their brains,” said McGarry.

McGarry made a lasting impression during her time at Ģý- not just for her creativity and talent, but for her leadership and compassion.

“Monica has the biggest heart of gold, as a class president, she was the light in the lives of quite a few students—both celebrating and making fun moments for her peers, to helping fundraise for some of their personal tragedies. She excelled in all her modules, and left herself open to the creative process, which left her often even surprising herself with what she could do. Monica is our first Battle of the Hair winner Empire has produced, and I was more than honored to accompany her and share a part of her journey. I’m more than certain, though this is the first of her achievements, this certainly won’t be the last for this talented young lady. She is an inspiration to her peers, very much including myself, as well. I couldn’t be any more proud of her for representing our school,” said Renee Bowen, Ģý educator.

At Ģý, we’re here to support you through every high and low- celebrating your wins and standing by you through the challenges. For McGarry, that support came in the form of a tight-knit group of students.

Ģý Tucson, AZ Cosmetology Graduate Sports Clips Mens Haircut Winner

“I made best friends in beauty school. It was something I was open to but not looking for directly. Right away, I felt like I clicked with a group of people. It was amazing. There is nothing like being supported by a group of women. It’s so inspiring to see them achieve their dreams. We give each other advice from our own perspectives in Cosmetology but also in life,” shared McGarry.

Though she completed her cosmetology program, her schooling does not end there. McGarry is fortunate to have several passions that she plans to make careers out of.

“I used to go to school for special elementary education, which is near and dear to my heart. I love teaching and being a safe place for people. My plan is to finish school 5-10 years from now. I want to be a Cosmetologist as a side job. Both of these careers are something I’ve always talked about and I’m very passionate about them,” said McGarry.

Your time as a beauty school student is a transformative one. We love seeing the growth in each of our students. McGarry discusses how she evolved during her schooling.

“I used to be a very closed-off person. Throughout beauty school, I learned to be much more open and get out of my comfort zone. I feel like networking has been super hard for me, but once I got the groove of it I thought it was nice. I’ve learned to be more open and to let people in my life. I learned to not let anxiety ruin my life. Anxiety has ruined my life before and now it’s not. I am super thankful for my educators at Empire and Lesha, the Executive Director. They have been so great to me during my time there. I’m grateful for the friends I made. I am grateful my husband made it as much of a goal of his as it was mine,” said McGarry.

Ģý Tucson, AZ Cosmetology Graduate Sports Clips Mens Haircut Winner

For those hesitant about putting yourself and your work out there, McGarry shares her advice.

You are the person who is holding you back. If someone is holding you back, they do not need to be in your life. You have one life, live it how you want to. The what-ifs are scary, you have to talk yourself down. You have to do the things you are unsure about. You don’t know if you will like something until you do it. Try it, stick it out, give it a good chance. If you’re scared, make the jump, do it, and tell someone you can trust so they can push you. There is no harm in trying,” said McGarry.

Monica, congratulations on this tremendous accomplishment. You are an inspiration to those following in your footsteps. We are so proud of you!

We are proud to celebrate Makayla Smith, a May 2025 graduate of the Cosmetology program at in Jackson, TN. Throughout her time at Empire, Makayla showed dedication, passion, and determination as she worked toward her goals. Her commitment to completing the program and building a future in the beauty industry is an inspiring example of perseverance.

Originally from South Carolina, Makayla chose to pursue her beauty education at Ģý in Jackson, TN. While her journey included challenges that interrupted her time as a student, she remained focused and determined to finish what she started. Makayla describes her experience as motivational, eye-opening, and a long time coming, and she is proud to be a graduate of Ģý.

Smith discovered her love for hair at an early age and surrounded herself with friends who shared her passion for beauty.

“At a very young age, I realized I had a passion for hair. I used to always do my hair for school. I would change my hairstyle weekly. As I got older, I wanted to further pursue that passion by practicing with my friends. They told me I should go to beauty school, and it went from there. It’s helpful to have friends in the same field as you. If I have questions, I can always talk to them and they will help me out,” said Smith.

Ģý Jackson, TN Cosmetology Student Graduate

Clarissa Byars, Executive Director of Ģý Jackson, shares:

“It has been a great honor to have Makayla Smith as a student. She has proven that through perseverance and hard work, ‘the sky’s the limit’. Although she had some bumps in the road along the way, she never stopped. She has shown her classmates what hard work and determination can do for you. She exemplifies what a true professional Cosmetologist should look like. I am so excited to see what’s ahead for her and her future.”

At Ģý, we strive to create a supportive learning environment that welcomes students from all backgrounds and experiences. For Smith, the Empire community had a powerful and positive impact.

“I love everything about Ģý. Before I went there, my mental health wasn’t in the best place. Now that I completed the course, I feel like I’m in a whole new headspace. I look at things in a more positive light and I feel more excited. It has been so helpful for me. The educators are very helpful and focused on your mental health. They definitely care about you. When I got to the enrichment class, I had an educator who told us how we can really make something special with this career. She opened my eyes and I looked at things from a different perspective,” said Smith.

During her journey, Smith’s family decided to relocate back to South Carolina. However, their plans were disrupted when Hurricane Helene devastated the Carolinas, creating unexpected challenges.

“When I-40 was collapsing, I was on the road. The chaos was really bad, it scared me. It felt like doomsday. It made me more determined to finish out my goal. I took the time to reevaluate myself. I came back 10 times stronger,” said Smith.

Ģý Jackson, TN Cosmetology Student Graduate

When asked about considering other schools, Smith shared that she felt the strongest support at Ģý.

“When I went back to South Carolina to inquire about other schools, it was nothing like Empire. I was talking to the staff about my experience and time in school, they weren’t ready to work with me. It was nothing like being at Empire. At Empire, I felt wanted. Jackson was the better fit for me,” shared Smith.

Though her journey had some obstacles, Smith stayed focused on graduating and becoming a licensed Cosmetologist.

“This means the world to me. I have been pushing off doing this for a while. My heart is definitely in this, I wanted to do it for so long. It feels like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. I am ready to elevate and get to the next level. I am excited to see what is in store for me next. I feel very happy. I was emotional graduating, but I was happy. This was a huge goal I set for myself. I’m not stopping here,” said Smith.

Ģý Jackson, TN Cosmetology Student Graduate

Looking ahead, Smith is determined to grow, elevate her skills, and make her mark in the beauty industry through continuous learning.

“I hope to work with a salon, with a good mentor to show me the ins and outs of managing a salon. My long-term goal is to be a salon owner. It’ll take time and patience but I will get there. I plan to dominate the beauty industry. I hope to become one of the best stylists there is. I hope I can take this, and elevate, grow, and learn. I like to make people feel beautiful. I love seeing the reaction you get when you spin them around in the chair and they can see the transformation. Their faces light up and they get so happy by changing their hair,” said Smith.

Smith offers valuable advice for balancing school, work, and personal life while pursuing a career in cosmetology.

Stay grounded. There’s a reason why you started. If you feel in doubt or lost, go back to the reason why you started. That’s what I had to do. Staying consistent is the main thing. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. If your heart’s in it, it’s meant for you,” said Smith.

Makayla’s story is a powerful reminder that determination and passion can overcome any obstacle. We are excited to see her continue to grow and succeed in the beauty industry.

The North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) is the most prestigious in the industry, celebrating talent across the nation in categories such as cutting, color, and texture. NAHA nominee Evie Johnson and NAHA winner Jamal Edmonds offered a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship opportunity for two students, supporting them in navigating NAHA. In this article, we shed light on the accomplishments of Evie and Jamal, the exclusive mentorship, and how it impacts the success of our future beauty professionals.

Evie and Jamal are close friends, which has been central to their success. Both are accomplished professionals with deep expertise in textured hair, education, and creative styling. Evie is a certified trichologist, salon owner, platform stylist, and educator with a specialty in hair shaping and treatment. Jamal is a Mizani educator, NAHA finalist and winner, and a colorist/texture expert. Evie Johnson is a multiple-time NAHA nominee and Jamal Edmonds won the 2022 NAHA award for Texture.

NAHA nominee Evie Johnson and NAHA winner Jamal Edmonds offered a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship opportunity for two Ģý Florence Cosmetology students.

Ģý had the opportunity to host a Mizani Mentorship Moments session for all school locations, with Evie and Jamal as our featured guests. The purpose of this session was to inspire future beauty professionals and provide hands-on industry insight. Following this session, two E students from Florence, KY would receive mentorship from Jamal and Evie, preparing them for their own NAHA submissions.

The two talented students selected for this life-changing opportunity are Kristeen Kettelhake and Alyssa Boles. Both are driven, creative, and eager to make their mark in the beauty industry. Their selection for this mentorship is a testament to their commitment and potential.

Kristeen Kettelhake never imagined she would be chosen for such an incredible opportunity.

“My beauty career has grown a lot since starting at Empire. When we met about the mentorship contest. I was excited about it but never thought I would have been selected. When I found out I was selected I was in shock, I called my mom immediately to tell her about it,” she shares.

Kristeen’s mood board reflects her love for nature’s beauty, drawing inspiration from the theme of an enchanted forest.

“There is beauty in nature; it doesn’t matter what season it is, there is always something beautiful. It also shows growth. Nature always changes. In autumn and winter, the plants start dying due to the cold but shortly after, spring and summer come. It reminds me, even though life changes and starts a new season of my life there will always be an opportunity to grow and learn,” Kristeen expresses.

NAHA nominee Evie Johnson and NAHA winner Jamal Edmonds offered a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship opportunity for two Ģý Florence Cosmetology students.

Kristeen hopes to learn new techniques from Evie and Jamal and gain the skills needed to pursue her own NAHA submission in the future.

Alyssa Boles has always had a deep connection to beauty, experimenting with makeup and hair at a young age. Despite the doubts of her peers, she decided to pursue her passion.

“I’ve always loved makeup and hair. In my junior year of high school, I thought about going to Empire to expand my knowledge and become a cosmetologist. However, all of my friends were going to a four-year college. Empire has supported me by giving me the best education. I’ve learned so many things from all my teachers, my first teacher there was Ms. Tuvara and she was the absolute best,” Alyssa shares.

Alyssa’s mood board was inspired by Greek mythology, showcasing the strength, grace, and power of goddesses like Athena, Aphrodite, and Artemis.

“I’ve always loved mood boards and vision boards. I’ve never had good luck, so I didn’t even think I’d win! But when I got the email, I was ecstatic, I instantly had to tell everyone I knew. I’ve loved Greek mythology since I was in elementary school because of Percy Jackson. And goddesses are the epitome of beauty, what better way to show off a woman’s beauty than to represent them with different goddesses? Each goddess has a role, Athena is wisdom and strength, Aphrodite is beauty and grace, and Artemis is a leader and the queen of night. I wanted to reflect different women with the different goddesses,” she explains.

NAHA nominee Evie Johnson and NAHA winner Jamal Edmonds offered a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship opportunity for two Ģý Florence Cosmetology students.

Alyssa is dedicated to perfecting her craft and expanding her skill set. She is eager to learn about the business and marketing aspects of the beauty world.

“Whether I choose to do hair, nails, or skin, I want to be the best I can be. I plan on taking many notes and documenting a bit of my experience with Evie and Jamal. As I move through schooling and working with clients, I’m doing great work but I’m excited to see and learn behind the scenes. Working with Evie and Jamal will help me feel more confident in myself and my craft. This experience will show how many other opportunities there are for cosmetologists,” she reflects.

This mentorship has a long-lasting impact on our Ģý students, as it provides them with exclusive insight into the beauty industry. This opportunity will shape their careers as they begin their journey to submitting an entry to NAHA. Students, we encourage you to search for mentorship opportunities as they will guide you toward success. Please reach out to the team at your school for possible opportunities.

Sade Luster’s journey to becoming a graduate ofNorth Hills, PA, is a powerful testament to resilience and passion. As a 35-year-old single mother of two, she faced significant challenges, including financial struggles and homelessness, while pursuing her dream of becoming a traveling makeup artist. Her time at Empire not only sharpened her skills but also led to her recognition as a finalist in the Licensed to Create Color the World Competition, showcasing her creativity and determination. Her story is a reminder that with perseverance, anything is possible.

“Since being in school, I had to sell my truck because money was tight and I couldn’t make my tuition payments. At the beginning of this year, I became homeless. I had to drop my program for about a month until I was able to figure things out. The educators have always been very nice and understanding. Mr. Deem was more than understanding during my challenging times. He helped me know where I’m at and motivated me to keep going. This has been a long journey, but it has been a great experience,” said Luster.

Matthew Deem, Empire North Hills, PA Executive Director, shares:

“Sade’s dedication and talent as both a makeup artist and hairstylist are truly inspiring. Her creative work has not only been celebrated on Empire’s social media but also earned her a spot as a finalist in the prestigious Color the World competition, where she competed against industry professionals. Starting as a part-time evening student, Sade has shown incredible perseverance, overcoming numerous obstacles to complete her program. She consistently seeks feedback and strives for improvement, embodying the true spirit of a dedicated and passionate artist.”

For Luster, the love for her family drives her resilience. It fuels her determination to overcome obstacles and set an example for her children. She shares:

“I have two little faces that look at me every morning. My kids and my 9-pound chihuahua are my motivation to keep going. I want them to see how resilient and strong I am. When they are older, they can see that I had my struggles and let that be the motivation to keep going. I want them to conquer whatever comes their way.”

While pursuing her cosmetology license, Luster was accepted into the IATSE Media Makers program, a prestigious opportunity designed to prepare makeup artists for the demands of set life. Luster was one of 12 individuals selected for this training.

Reflecting on her time at Ģý, Luster noticed self-growth as she fine-tuned her skills.

“At Empire, I’ve learned to have more patience with myself. The encouragement here is great, everyone around here is amazing. Before coming to school, I knew how to do some things, but not on a professional level. Being able to come to school and sharpen those skills makes me feel more ready professionally. My time at Empire has definitely been an unforgettable experience. It will be a part of my great memories forever,” shared Luster.

Luster understands the value of connections and the opportunities they bring, noting:

“Networking has made my entire experience, I would not be where I am without networking with others. You can get far by using word-of-mouth networking, and having others recommend your services.”

Luster’s journey is filled with challenges and triumphs. Her story serves as a reminder for all:

“Never give up. Don’t give up on yourself or your passion. If it is difficult, keep going. If you’re scared, do it scared. You never know which opportunity is waiting for you. You won’t know if you’re great at something if you don’t do it,” said Luster.

Sade Luster’s journey at Ģý illustrates the transformative power of resilience and passion in cosmetology. As she continues to pursue her dreams, her story serves as an inspiring reminder for others to embrace their challenges. We are incredibly proud of Luster and her determination.

Ģý Harrisburg, PA Cosmetology Student Spotlight Success

Apollo Alleman’s transition from a successful 15-year career as an executive chef to pursuing a passion for beauty reflects a profound personal transformation. Enrolling at Harrisburg, PA in January 2024, he has embraced the challenges of his new path with enthusiasm and determination. As he balances his studies with a role as a Salon Coordinator at Sports Clips Haircuts, Alleman’s journey exemplifies resilience and commitment, setting the stage for an impactful future in the beauty industry.

With less than four months remaining in his studies, Alleman is fully committed to maximizing his educational experience. In August 2024, he received a student feature award for having his work showcased on Ģý’s social media. He is also a member of the 90/90 Club and was named Student of the Month. The 90/90 Club recognizes Future Professional Stylists who excel in the program, achieving at least 90% attendance and a 90% GPA. Alleman has earned several scholarships, including the Schwarzkopf Shaping Future Professionals, Moroccan Oil Student Scholarship, and the High Performance Salon Academy – Elevating Perceptions Scholarship.

Ģý Harrisburg, PA Cosmetology Student Spotlight Success

As Alleman reflects on his journey, he emphasizes the pivotal moment that led him to the beauty industry, sharing insights into his past and motivations. He states:

“I switched over to this after spending 15 years as an executive chef working in various positions in the kitchen. Eventually, I realized this wasn’t what I wanted anymore and it wasn’t aligning with my values. It was filled with long hours and late nights. I have a 10-year-old daughter, and being away from her for those hours was not what I wanted. My mom and sister-in-law were both Cosmetologists, I was always having crazy things done to my hair. I had an underlying interest in it, I figured it would be a great career choice to channel my creativity. I wanted to help people feel good about themselves.

To maintain such high academic standards, Alleman emphasizes the importance of passion in his work.

“In addition to what I’m learning at school, I’m also learning from Sports Clips and other cosmetology avenues. I’m trying to absorb all the information since it is new to me. I’m keeping the passion alive and keeping things fun. You have to enjoy the learning aspect. I have ADHD, if something is not giving me dopamine then I am not doing it,” said Alleman.

Looking ahead, Alleman outlines his goals for the beauty industry.

“Short-term I would like to get more into the niche of precision cuts and vivid hair colors. I want to further develop my skills for magazine photoshoots and runways. Eventually, I would like to start a local foundation to provide free beauty services to domestic violence survivors. That has always been my main cause that I have supported. Helping them out would be a great way to give back. I was lucky enough to receive scholarships to help with the costs, I want to help out others,” states Alleman.

Ģý Harrisburg, PA Cosmetology Student Spotlight Success

In addition to his studies at Empire Harrisburg, Alleman has earned two certifications that enable him to provide a safe environment for all clients: PBA Cut It Out Certification in Domestic Violence Awareness and Redken Safe Space Certification.

“The Cut It Out program with PBA is really important in our industry. This is training specific for our industry, to recognize signs of domestic violence and how to approach those conversations. We are in a unique position with our clients, since we are in their personal space. They see us more often than they might see a doctor. We are seeing the changes that can happen in people. Redken Safe Space Certified- surrounds the LGBTQ community. I am bisexual and the salon I will be working for is owned by a gay man. That training is about the community as a whole which I believe is important. When anyone sits in my chair, I want them to know that I see them as a person and as whatever they choose to identify as. I want to cater their service to their lifestyle and personality. I hate gender pricing, hair is hair. There’s not a whole lot of places where everyone feels safe, if I can provide one of them then I have done my part,” said Alleman.

As a full-time student, Alleman works as a Salon Coordinator at Sport Clips Haircuts. After graduation, he will take on a position at Salon Metro Mikee’s in Harrisburg. Reflecting on his current role, he shares:

“It’s a lot of fun; the team I work with is great and super supportive of my Cosmetology journey. Before I got to the hair coloring portion of school, my manager taught me how to do highlights on her hair. The experience has been invaluable. Working in a salon setting pushed me to do more in school. It solidified that this is what I want to do.

Alleman advises aspiring beauty industry students to prioritize enjoyment in their learning.

“Make sure you are having fun with it. If you are enjoying what you’re doing, then it doesn’t feel like learning. Throw yourself into it. It will come to you much easier. The opportunities are out there, sometimes it could be difficult to find them. Anyone who wants this as a career can do it if they are determined and keep their mind to it. Show up to school. The more often you come, the quicker you can graduate, and you can start your career,” said Alleman.

Reflecting on his journey, he shares:

“When I was considering school, I was absolutely terrified. I spent 15 years in a career that I was successful in. Now I’m starting over completely at the bottom. I have never been happier, this year has been so fulfilling despite the setbacks. It’s doing something that I love doing and helping others. This has made my life so much better. If you’re passionate about creating and helping others, do it.”

We are incredibly proud of Alleman for his determination and passion as he creates a meaningful career in the beauty industry. Connect with Apollo Alleman on Instagram and watch his journey, @apollosnips.

Brooklyn Thompson, an Shamokin Dam graduate, has been awarded the George Bradley Scholarship, which will fully cover her educational costs! Thompson graduated in July 2024 as Student of the Month.

“Words can’t explain how I feel about receiving the award. The fact that I’m the last recipient makes me feel so special,” said Thompson.

At the time of her graduation, it was announced that she was the Student of the Month. Then, she was presented with the check, announcing her as the George Bradley Scholarship Winner. This moment was shared with Thompson’s family members, fellow students, and Empire team members.

“I felt amazed, and I was speechless. I was in shock. I started bawling and I didn’t know what to say. I knew I wasn’t the only one applying or going through personal things. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before. Everything was exciting, and it all hit me at once,” said Thompson.

“My mother even cried because she was surprised by this scholarship. When she saw the amount, she started to cry because nothing like this had ever happened. It felt amazing. I went through so much to get to school. Before I enrolled, my car broke down, and there were personal challenges. I was surprised I even made it to graduation. There were so many times I wanted to quit, but I kept pushing myself. Ending with a bang felt really good and showed me there are more things that I could do in the future. My life became so much better in these nine months of being in school. It feels so good because now I can focus on my career.

Morgan Nelling, Executive Director at Ģý Shamokin Dam, was the first recipient of this scholarship and now has the pleasure of awarding it to one of her students.

“Being a former recipient, I know that the scholarship is awarded to someone who truly needs it financially. In her essay, she must have portrayed that quality, along with her dreams and goals for the beauty industry. Brooklyn was everyone’s hype girl. Her personality is so fun and welcoming that I truly believe it will carry her far in her career. It hasn’t been long since she graduated, and I’m already seeing many posts from the salon she is working at, showcasing how well she is doing. Without a doubt, the scholarship committee couldn’t have chosen a better candidate. She is a gem and loves making people feel beautiful. She showed us that throughout her entire education. She works hard outside of school as well to provide the best life she can for her child. Not only myself but my entire staff was thrilled to be a part of presenting her with this amazing achievement. Being the first recipient, awarding our students with this scholarship will always be one of my favorite memories and it is so special to me, but having Brooklyn as the last recipient was like the cherry on top,” said Morgan Nelling.

While attending beauty school, Thompson also worked at Wegmans and cared for her two-year-old son as a single mother. She exemplifies dedication and is truly deserving of this scholarship.

“I’m glad I made friends at school that I could ride there with. I had people helping watch my son, but I eventually got him into daycare. I would go to school all day, work at Wegmans until midnight, and hardly be able to see my son. It was hard and depressing. But now, it’s worth it because I can be with my son every day. He goes to school while I work, and I have time to cook dinner and put him to bed. It was a lot, but I did it,” said Thompson.

From TikTok to beauty school, Thompson channeled her love of beauty into a career in helping others.

“I love watching TikTok videos of people doing lashes, facials, hair, and makeup. I would watch for hours and start to make my own videos. When I was younger, I was bullied about the way I looked. I tried to do my makeup and hair, but I didn’t have anyone to show me how to do it,” said Thompson.

Reflecting on her time at Ģý, Thompson shared her positive experience.

“It has been so good. I’m so happy that I decided to go to school. I was in a bad place before. In the pre-salon, Miss Meg brought me out of my character. The other students allowed me to be myself. I made so many friends at school that support me. Everything felt really good, to see my friends happy for me,” said Thompson.

Following graduation, Thompson is now working at a salon while she focuses on building her clientele. Her long-term goal is to open a salon, give back to her community, and share her knowledge with others.

“I want to help others with their mental health in beauty school. In my scholarship essay, I wrote that I wanted to do for someone else what was done for me. I want to give someone a scholarship and have them feel what I felt. I always wanted to teach classes to those who can’t afford beauty school. I want to enroll in the Educator Training program,” said Thompson.

Ģý Student Full Ride Scholarship Recipient

Thompson’s motivation is deeply personal, rooted in her desire to create a better life for her son.

My son is my inspiration. I pushed myself to not struggle like how my parents struggled. I went through so much; I wanted to feel free. I want my son to look at me one day and say, ‘My mom did this.’ My son is the biggest reason why I went to school,” said Thompson.

Thompson has been a hard worker all her life and encourages others to persevere despite challenges.

“No matter what, you will make it. No matter how hard it is, keep pushing through it. It will be better in the end,” said Thompson.

Congratulations to Brooklyn Thompson on receiving the George Bradley Scholarship! We are proud of your dedication to making a significant impact in the beauty industry.

We are thrilled to announce that Vanessa Black, a graduate of in Cincinnati, OH, has been awarded the Regis Unleash the Beauty of Potential Scholarship. Black graduated in May 2024 and has already demonstrated exceptional skill and passion in her field, earning her a $5,000 scholarship.

“The relief of the financial strain is unbelievable. I am so grateful, I can’t believe it. I have never won anything like this before. When I was told the news, I felt immediate relief because I paid for school by myself. It did not matter to me if I won $500 or $5,000, any assistance would make a huge difference for me. It is a huge blessing.” said Vanessa Black.

Jamie Suarez, Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Education at Regis Corporation, extends his congratulations:

“We at Regis are excited to announce that Vanessa Black has been selected to receive the Regis Unleash the Beauty of Potential scholarship. Vanessa’s outstanding talent and dedication have earned her this well-deserved recognition. We at Regis are proud of Vanessa’s achievements and wish her a very successful career in Cosmetology!”

Black shares her heartfelt motivation for entering the beauty industry, highlighting her passion for transforming lives.

“One of the things that drove me to pursue this career is giving people a confidence boost. I’ve done hair for people of all ages. I’ve done a little girl’s hair who was being bullied at school for her hair. I saw the smile on her face once she felt good about herself. People on the outside think it is a minor thing, it’s just hair. But for that little girl, it is a big deal. To be the one that does that for someone is huge for me. I love educating my clients on my process and how to maintain their hair.”

If you’re passionate about an industry, don’t let opinions from outside sources hold you back. Learn from Black about how external perceptions initially deterred her from entering the beauty industry.

“Cosmetology has always been an interest of mine, ever since I was small. I would always do my dolls’ hair. I would play with my friends’ hair, my mom’s hair, and anyone sitting still long enough. I was delayed starting my beauty career because many people told me not to. I listened to the outside voices instead of what I wanted to do. I went to college as a paralegal major. As I was studying for the bar exam, I said to myself this is not what I want to do, why am I doing this? Finally, I looked into Ģý. I needed something that would allow me to work full-time along with school. Empire offered an evening program, which made my childhood dream come true. It happened way later than I originally planned, but I was finally able to do what I wanted to do. When I took the leap, my family was right behind me, supporting me. It has been a long time coming.”

Black advises students to enter Ģý with an open mind and readiness to learn.

“When I got to beauty school I knew what I wanted to accomplish. Being in school for nearly two years part-time, while working full-time, is long enough. I didn’t want to delay my graduation by fooling around in class. I had to focus on my studies and keep my goal in mind. Once you get to school, soak it all up and take advantage of it. There is so much experience within those walls. There are no points in your career where you can stop learning. Always be ready to learn, and never be too proud to think you can’t ask questions or improve. Sometimes the piece of advice seems so minor, but it makes a huge difference. You are surrounded by so much knowledge and skills, don’t waste your time here by thinking you know everything,” Black said.

If you’re thinking about starting your journey, Black offers encouragement to go for it. If you enroll with us, we will be your support system, guiding and assisting you throughout your entire journey.

“Go for it. Everyone in the world is going to have their own opinion of what you should do, where you should go to school, and what to do with your life. At the end of the day, you are the only person who has to live your life. You can have a job making more money than you could dream of but be miserable. Go after what you love.”

We understand that many students also have additional responsibilities while in school. Black shares her advice for persevering through the challenging days.

“Once I started, I knew I wanted to finish on time and have good grades. It has been a struggle. There were days when I was exhausted, but it was worth it. There will be days you don’t want to go to school but tell yourself to get there and get your hours. Get what you need done. Otherwise, you will be in school longer than you should have been. Once you get to school, it is better because it’s what you love to do. Don’t quit when it’s tough because if you are passionate about it then it will be worth it.

Now with beauty school finished, her plans include passing her State Board exams and then starting her career with JCPenny.

“Luckily, I already have a job lined up for me as well. I went to JCPenny to check out their salon on my own, and they started talking to me about working there. I’ve gone through the interview process, and now all I need to do is pass my exam. Everything has been falling into place. I feel so blessed. I’m excited to grow my clientele at JCPenny and advance my skill set there.”

This achievement is a testament to Vanessa’s hard work, commitment, and the bright future that lies ahead in the beauty industry. Join us in congratulating Vanessa on this well-deserved honor!

Rebecca Tira, a graduate of in Shamokin Dam, PA, has opened her salon, dedicated to fostering an encouraging and uplifting environment for both clients and employees. Tira graduated from beauty school in 2019 and is now the proud owner of Bec’s Beauty Co. in Williamsport, PA.

Bec’s Beauty Co. is a full-service salon and spa, with a focus on a positive atmosphere. Tira was one of the few who didn’t have a lifelong dream of opening a salon. However, it was her working experience that led her to this decision.

I never wanted to have my own salon, which is kind of crazy. Even when I was in beauty school, I was one of the few who did not want my own salon. The past 2 years, I started thinking about it because I was working for someone else and seeing a smaller income from that. It was still beneficial because I was in this field to make someone feel better, not for the money. Every salon is different. I wanted a place that was a good environment for clients and their employees. A place for employees to not feel pressure to have back-to-back clients, they can have time in between. A place for encouragement and building each other up,” said Tira.

Through a genuine love for hands-on work and the joy of making others feel beautiful, Tira’s path to success unfolds as a pathway of inspiration.

I always wanted to get into cosmetology since I was a young teenager. It was something I enjoyed doing. I do better working hands-on, so I knew this was the route for me. It’s rewarding to make people feel good. Especially people who come in having a bad day and see them leave with a smile on their face. It changes how you feel, it’s super rewarding,” said Tira.

Tira appreciated her foundation from Ģý and those who made the experience so memorable. At Empire, we work with each student individually to ensure you’re on the path to success.

It was a good experience, I really enjoyed my time at Empire. I had great educators and made lifelong friends. I wouldn’t want to do it any other way. Morgan Nelling was my instructor and she went above and beyond teaching. She cared for every student, every individual. You felt like you were more than just a student. I definitely won’t forget that,” said Tira.

Morgan Nelling, Executive Director Ģý Shamokin Dam, PA, watched Tira grow throughout her beauty career. She even had the opportunity to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the salon.

While Becca was in school, I moved from pre-salon educator to the salon floor educator and was her educator almost the entire time she was here. Becca has a heart of gold and is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I knew from the start that she would excel in this career when she started, not only because of her talent but because of her personality. She’s definitely a student who I will never forget. It was really exciting for me to see on Facebook that she was opening her own business, and I of course reacted to the posts and even shared a couple for her which is rare for me. Then she reached out and asked if I would be there for her ribbon-cutting ceremony and I knew that I needed and more importantly, wanted to be there for her. I’m super grateful to be able to continue to watch her grow into a new boss and business owner with her husband. I’m excited to watch her business grow and I believe she deserves the absolute best!” said Morgan Nelling.

Navigating the unknown is challenging in itself. Whether you are at the beginning of your beauty journey, or looking for a change, Tira shares her advice.

If I could go back in time, I would make more of the time I had at Empire. I think when it comes to schooling, there are times when you drag your feet. I would make even more of the time I had there, and enjoy every moment of it. No matter how old you are or how many years you have in the industry, you can always learn something from someone. When I graduated school and had my first job, I told my boss ‘That’s not how my educator taught me.’ She told me something that I will never forget, which was ‘In this industry, you will always learn something from somebody. No one is doing it the wrong way, it is a different way to the same result.’ You can learn from anyone, older or younger,” said Tira.

Rebecca, congratulations on the opening of Bec’s Beauty Co. We are unbelievably proud of you and the change you are making in the beauty industry.
