Jose Navarro, a student at in Standale, Michigan, recently earned national recognition after winning the Sport Clips Battle of the Hair competition. As one of only six finalists selected across the country, Jose attended the Sport Clips National Huddle in Kentucky and received a $5,000 scholarship.

Watch the official video announcement .

At just 19 years old, Jose’s journey into the beauty industry reflects dedication, resilience, and passion. Raised in a large family with five siblings, Jose faced challenges early in life, including the loss of his father at age 10. His story is one of perseverance, from humble beginnings in Mexico to achieving national success in the United States.

A Passion for Barbering and Hair Design

Jose was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and spent much of his childhood in Mexico before returning to Michigan at age 12. His interest in barbering began at a young age.

At 16, he started learning through an online haircutting course. While visiting Mexico, he took a hands-on class to continue building his skills. When he came back home, he practiced by cutting his four brothers’ hair.

After graduating high school, Jose took a year to think about his future before enrolling at Ģý in Standale in November 2025.

“It’s been a great time. I’ve learn so much more than cutting hair. I really enjoy it,” he said.

Competing in the Sport Clips Battle of the Hair

Jose heard about the competition from his educators at Ģý, who encouraged students to apply for the scholarship opportunity.

There were no excuses not to do it. No hesitation. It’s something I love to do,” he said.

To enter, students submitted before-and-after haircut photos. From there, six finalists were selected to attend the Sport Clips National Huddle in Kentucky.

“I was excited not only for the scholarship but also to be competing with people from across the country. I had so much excitement. The scholarship would help me so much,” Jose said.

At the event, Jose’s talent and dedication stood out, earning him a spot as one of the national winners.

“The trip was such a beautiful experience. Since I was little, I wanted to be in the industry. Being on a stage like that at such a young age opened my eyes to the opportunities this industry can bring,” he said.

“It was such a great experience. I was so excited to hear my name being called and so grateful.”

Support from Ģý

Ģý in Standale, MI Executive Director Megan shared this about Jose:

“Jose started school with us back in November, and from day one, he has always walked in with a smile on his face and greeted everyone with a warm hello. He truly brightens every room he enters. Jose has a heart of gold and is incredibly thankful for this opportunity. When he found out he had won his trip to Kentucky, he immediately called his mom and became emotional. He was determined to bring home the scholarship, and his hard work and dedication paid off. Jose is committed to his education and loves learning new things every day. He has big goals for his future, and we are so thankful to have him as part of our school family.”

Standale Educator Kena, who accompanied Jose to the National Sports Clips Huddle in Louisville, Kentucky, also shared her experience working with him:

“I was so honored to be chosen to attend the National Sports Clips Huddle in Louisville, Kentucky, with Jose. I was so proud and excited when he was chosen as a finalist, and even more proud when he won. He stood out amongst the other finalists, and there was no doubt in my mind that the title would be his. Not only is Jose kind, caring, and God-fearing, he is also considerate. There is never a day that goes by when Jose isn’t smiling, but he is also a lot of fun to be around. It has been an absolute honor to be his educator.”

Jose credits his success to the support system around him, including his instructors, classmates, friends, and family.

Future Goals in the Beauty Industry

After graduating, Jose plans to continue his education and pursue his educator license. He hopes to inspire others and give back to the next generation of beauty professionals.

“I love cutting hair and I never want to stop. There is much to learn, but I know I can help others with what I know,” he said.

During the competition, he also connected with industry professionals who motivated him to keep pushing forward.

“I met a lot of people on that trip that really inspired me, such as Kelly Cardenas. He inspired me to do bigger things in the industry. He assured me that even though I already accomplished something, there is a lot more to go for and to never settle,” Jose said.

Advice for Future Students

Jose encourages other students to take chances and put themselves out there.

“Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there because that’s the way people would get to know you. You might be a little afraid to meet people, but meeting people is going to get you to the places where you might one day dream of being. Your age doesn’t matter. You can always do it or try for it. Don’t hesitate to try again and again,” he said.

He also shared gratitude for those who supported him throughout his journey.

“I want to mention my friends, my instructors specifically Ms. Kena and Mr. Henry, Jacob Ortiz, and my fellow classmates. A special shoutout to God, who made it possible for me to be there. My family has always supported me in everything I do, especially my mom, Angelica, and my brothers.”

Stories like Jose’s highlight the real opportunities available to students at Ģý. With hands-on training, dedicated educators, and industry connections, students are prepared to turn their passion into a career. Ģý looks forward to supporting Jose as he continues to grow in the beauty industry.

Will AI Replace Hair Stylists?

AI is changing how people make decisions—from what to wear to how to style their hair. Some clients are even using AI tools to explore hair color ideas before stepping into a salon.

At the same time, a growing question is starting to surface:

Will AI eventually replace careers like cosmetology?

The short answer: not likely.

But the reason why matters—especially if you’re considering a future in the beauty industry.

Is Cosmetology At Risk Of Being Replaced By AI?

Some recent analyses suggest that careers like hairdressing and cosmetology rank among the lowest risk for automation.

While exact percentages vary depending on the study, the consistent takeaway is clear:

These roles depend heavily on human skill, judgment, and interaction.

Unlike digital tasks that can be automated, cosmetology involves real-time decision-making and physical precision that technology still can’t replicate.

Will AI Replace Hair Stylists?

What AI Can Do And Where It Stops

AI can:

  • suggest styles based on trends
  • generate inspiration images
  • recommend color combinations

But AI cannot:

  • assess the current condition of a client’s hair in real time
  • adjust techniques mid-service
  • account for how products react across different hair types
  • build trust through personal interaction

These are the factors that determine whether a result actually works—not just in theory, but in practice.

If you’re exploring how these skills are developed, you can view available programs here:

Why Human Expertise Becomes More Valuable Not Less

As technology evolves, careers that combine technical skill with human interaction tend to become more valuable—not less.

In cosmetology, that includes:

  • adapting to each individual client
  • understanding long-term maintenance and lifestyle
  • making adjustments based on experience, not just input

These aren’t static decisions—they happen in real time.

At Ģý, students build these skills through hands-on training, working with real clients in environments designed to reflect what they’ll experience after graduation. is essential.

Will AI Replace Hair Stylists?

What This Means If You’re Considering A Career In Beauty

If you’re thinking about entering the beauty industry, this shift actually works in your favor.

Clients may come in with ideas from AI or social media—but they still rely on trained professionals to:

  • interpret those ideas
  • apply them safely
  • deliver consistent, high-quality results

That gap between suggestion and execution is where trained professionals stand out.

Understanding The Investment In Your Training

For many students, one of the biggest questions is how to pay for school.

Financial aid, scholarships, and other options may be available to those who qualify. Understanding what’s available can make the path forward much clearer.

Choosing The Right Path Forward

AI is a powerful tool—but it’s still just that: a tool.

In careers like cosmetology, where results depend on precision, adaptability, and human connection, technology supports the work—it doesn’t replace it.

The future of the industry isn’t about choosing between AI and professionals.

It’s about professionals who know how to apply their skills in a world where technology is just one part of the equation.

The beauty industry is evolving, and one of the most significant shifts is toward inclusivity. At , we are dedicated to training future beauty professionals to meet the diverse needs of all clients with empathy, skill, and adaptability.

Rosemarie Del Plato: Leading the Way in Inclusive Beauty Training

At our Union, NJ school, educator Rosemarie Del Plato is at the forefront of this movement. With over five years of experience working with neurodivergent clients, Rosemarie has developed a unique approach that combines technical expertise with a deep understanding of sensory-safe techniques. Her work is a shining example of how inclusive beauty training can make a real difference in the salon experience.

Rosemarie’s passion for working with neurodivergent clients stems from her personal connection to the community. Her sister, who has special needs, inspired her to explore ways to make beauty services more accessible and comfortable. Now, Rosemarie teaches her students how to approach every client with care and consideration, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and understood.

What Inclusive Beauty Training Means at Ģý

Inclusive beauty training at Ģý goes beyond traditional skills. It’s about preparing students to work with clients of all backgrounds and needs, whether neurodivergent, elderly, or those with sensory sensitivities. Rosemarie emphasizes key aspects of this training, including:

  • Understanding communication styles: Every client has different ways of expressing their needs.
  • Adapting services for comfort: From lowering the music to dimming the lights, small changes can make a big difference.
  • Building rapport and trust: Establishing a safe, welcoming space is essential for clients to feel at ease.
  • Personalized approach: One size does not fit all. Each client requires an individualized approach to their salon experience.

Rosemarie uses hands-on techniques to train her students in sensory-safe cuts, teaching them how to use quieter clippers, reduce distractions, and spend time connecting with clients before starting a service.

Why Inclusivity Matters in Modern Salons

In today’s world, clients expect more than just a great haircut. They expect to be treated with respect, care, and empathy. Inclusive salons are not only more successful in building long-term client relationships but also stand out in a competitive, ever-changing industry.

A Vision for the Future

Rosemarie’s dedication to inclusive beauty training goes beyond the classroom. In April, during Autism Awareness Month, she organized a sensory-safe event to educate students, state officials, and the local community about the importance of accommodating neurodivergent clients. This event featured testimonials and live demonstrations, highlighting the positive impact sensory-safe techniques can have on the client experience.

Her collaboration with Danna Dennis, founder of aims to bring this essential training to beauty schools across New Jersey and beyond. Rosemarie believes that the next generation of beauty professionals should be equipped with the skills to serve all clients, making inclusive beauty practices a nationwide standard.

Tuition and Hidden Costs of Beauty School

When researching beauty school, most students look at tuition first.

But tuition isn’t the only cost to consider.

Across forums and student discussions, one of the most common concerns is this:
What extra costs should I expect?

Understanding the full financial picture helps you avoid surprises and plan realistically. This guide breaks down the most common hidden or overlooked expenses — and how to prepare for them.

Quick Answer: Tuition Is Just The Starting Point

Tuition typically covers:

  • Instruction
  • Classroom learning
  • Hands-on training
  • Facility use

However, additional costs may apply depending on the program and state requirements.

The goal isn’t to discourage you — it’s to help you prepare.

Tuition and Hidden Costs of Beauty School

1. Student Kits And Tools

Most cosmetology and esthetics programs require a professional kit that may include:

  • Shears and cutting tools
  • Mannequin heads
  • Styling tools
  • Brushes and combs
  • Product supplies

Some schools include the kit in tuition. Others list it separately.

Before enrolling, ask:

  • Is the full kit included in tuition?
  • Are there tools I’ll need to purchase later?
  • What brands are included?

A professional kit is an investment in your career — but it should be transparent.

2. State Board Exam And Licensing Fees

After completing your program, you’ll typically pay for:

  • Written exam fees
  • Practical exam fees
  • Initial licensing fee

These fees vary by state and are usually paid directly to the state board.

Ask your admissions team:

  • What are the current state board fees?
  • Are exam prep materials included?

Licensing is required to legally work in most states, so budgeting for it is essential.

3. Supplies And Replacements

During training, you may need to replace:

  • Shears
  • Styling tools
  • Brushes
  • Practice materials

Over time, wear and tear is normal. While this cost isn’t extreme, it’s worth factoring into your planning.

4. Uniforms Or Dress Code Requirements

Some programs require:

  • Specific attire
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Branded uniforms

While these costs are typically modest, they are often overlooked.

5. Transportation And Scheduling Costs

Depending on your location, consider:

  • Gas or public transportation
  • Parking fees
  • Childcare
  • Reduced work hours while attending school

For many students, opportunity cost — not just tuition — is part of the decision.

6. Continuing Education (Long-Term Cost)

After licensing, some states require continuing education for renewal.

This isn’t immediate, but it’s part of maintaining your credential long term.

Tuition and Hidden Costs of Beauty School

What Is NOT Usually A Surprise (But Should Be Confirmed)

Before enrolling, confirm:

  • Total tuition
  • Payment schedule
  • Refund policy
  • Financial aid eligibility
  • What happens if you need extra time to complete hours

Clarity upfront reduces stress later.

Tuition and Hidden Costs of Beauty School

How To Financially Prepare

Here’s a simple preparation framework:

1. Request A Full Cost Breakdown

Ask for:

  • Tuition
  • Kit cost
  • Estimated licensing fees
  • Any optional supplies

Transparency matters.

2. Explore Financial Aid Options

Depending on eligibility, you may qualify for:

  • Federal financial aid
  • Grants
  • Scholarships
  • Payment plans

Empire provides financing guidance and scholarship information to help students plan responsibly.

3. Build A Small Buffer

Setting aside a modest emergency buffer can help cover:

  • Replacement tools
  • Unexpected schedule adjustments
  • Exam retakes if necessary

Preparation reduces anxiety.

Tuition and Hidden Costs of Beauty School

Why This Conversation Matters

Students who understand the full financial picture tend to:

  • Feel more confident enrolling
  • Complete their program successfully
  • Avoid unnecessary stress
  • Stay focused on skill development

Beauty school is an investment. Like any professional training, it requires planning.

Is Beauty School Still Worth It?

Hidden costs don’t automatically mean it’s not worth it.

The real question is:

Does the long-term earning potential and career flexibility outweigh the short-term investment?

For students committed to building a licensed career, structured training, hands-on experience, and state credentials can create long-term opportunity.

If you’re considering beauty school, start by:

  • Reviewing program details
  • Exploring tuition and financing options
  • Speaking with admissions about total cost breakdown

Preparation leads to better decisions.

Is cosmetology school worth it? (quick answer)

Cosmetology school can be worth it if you want a fast path into a flexible, skill-based career — but it depends on your goals, timeline, and financial situation.

For some, it leads to a creative, client-focused career with income growth over time. For others, the schedule, early income, or hands-on nature may not be the right fit.

The key is understanding what the path actually looks like before you commit.

Cosmetology School Investment

Who Cosmetology School Is (And Isn’t) For

It may be a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy hands-on, creative work
  • Like working directly with people
  • Want a faster path into a career without a traditional college route
  • Are open to building your income over time

It may not be the right fit if you:

  • Expect a high starting salary immediately
  • Prefer predictable schedules or desk-based work
  • Aren’t interested in client interaction
  • Want a purely academic or theoretical career path

This step matters. The better the fit, the better the outcome.

What Your Career Can Actually Look Like

Cosmetology isn’t one path — it opens multiple directions depending on your goals.

Salon stylist

  • Work in an established salon
  • Build a steady client base
  • Earn through services, tips, and product sales

Independent stylist

  • Rent a chair or open your own space
  • Set your own pricing and schedule
  • Higher income potential with more responsibility

Specialized paths

  • Hair color specialist
  • Texture specialist
  • Bridal or event styling
  • Opportunities to expand into esthetics or advanced services

What progression usually looks like

  • Early stage: learning, building clients, lower income
  • Mid stage: consistent bookings, stronger income stability
  • Long term: specialization, repeat clients, higher earning potential

👉 Explore what you’ll learn in the cosmetology program

What Does Cosmetology School Cost — And Is It Worth It?

Cost is one of the biggest factors in the decision.

While tuition varies, most students pay through a combination of:

  • Financial aid (if qualified)
  • Payment plans
  • Personal funding or support

What matters is not just cost — but what that cost leads to.

How to think about ROI

  • You’re investing in a skill you can use immediately
  • Income grows as your client base grows
  • Specialization increases earning potential

This is not a fixed-income path — it’s a skill-based path.

👉 Break down tuition and payment options

Cosmetology School Investment

How Long Does Cosmetology school take?

Most programs offer different paths depending on your schedule.

Typical timelines:

  • Full-time: faster completion
  • Part-time: more flexibility, longer duration

What affects your timeline:

  • Your schedule (full vs part-time)
  • State licensing hour requirements
  • Attendance consistency

The key question is not just how long it takes — but how quickly you can begin working in the field.

👉 See the full cosmetology program timeline
👉 Find a schedule that works near you

What most people don’t consider before enrolling

This is where expectations matter.

Client building takes time

You don’t graduate with a full book of clients — you build it.

Early income can vary

Income grows as your skills, speed, and client base improve.

Licensing is required

You’ll need to complete hours and pass your state board exam.

Long-term upside is real

Once established, you can:

  • Raise prices
  • Specialize
  • Control your schedule and workload

Understanding this upfront helps you make a better decision.

Cosmetology School Investment

Cosmetology School vs Other Career Paths

Compared to traditional college

  • Faster entry into the workforce
  • Lower overall time commitment
  • More direct skill application

Compared to self-teaching

  • Structured training
  • Hands-on practice with real clients
  • Required for licensing

Compared to apprenticeships

  • More consistent curriculum
  • Faster completion path
  • Clear licensing alignment

Each path has trade-offs — cosmetology school offers structure, speed, and a defined path to licensing.

Why Students Choose Empire

Students choose Ģý for a few key reasons:

  • Hands-on training with real clients

Cosmetology and Esthetics Program Comparison

If you’re considering beauty school, one of the first decisions you’ll face is this:

Should you pursue esthetics or full cosmetology?

Many prospective students are unsure about the difference. Both paths are creative, client-focused, and hands-on — but the training, licensing, and career outcomes can vary significantly.

This guide breaks down the pros, cons, and long-term considerations so you can choose the path that aligns with your goals.

Quick Overview: What’s The Difference?

Cosmetology programs typically include training in:

  • Hair cutting and styling
  • Hair coloring
  • Chemical services
  • Basic skincare
  • Nail fundamentals
  • Client consultation and business skills

Esthetics programs focus primarily on:

  • Skincare treatments
  • Facials
  • Hair removal
  • Makeup application
  • Advanced skin analysis
  • Product knowledge

Both require state-approved training and licensure before practicing professionally.

Cosmetology and Esthetics Program Comparison

Pros Of Full Cosmetology

1. Broader Skill Set

Cosmetology offers training across multiple service categories. Graduates can:

  • Work as hairstylists
  • Offer coloring and chemical services
  • Perform basic skincare
  • Provide nail services in some states

This flexibility can increase job options early in your career.

2. Greater Career Versatility

Licensed cosmetologists may work in:

  • Full-service salons
  • Booth rental environments
  • Independent studios
  • Platform artistry
  • Salon management

If you’re unsure which niche you want long term, cosmetology keeps more doors open.

3. Business Expansion Potential

Many salon owners begin as cosmetologists. The broader service knowledge can make it easier to:

  • Expand services
  • Train staff
  • Increase client value

If entrepreneurship is part of your long-term plan, cosmetology offers flexibility.

Cons Of Full Cosmetology

1. Longer Training Hours

Cosmetology programs generally require more hours than esthetics programs. Depending on your state, this may mean:

  • A longer time in school
  • More tuition investment
  • Greater time commitment

If you want to enter the workforce quickly, this may influence your decision.

2. Physically Demanding

Standing for long hours, working with chemicals, and maintaining tight schedules can be physically demanding. Hair services often require stamina and consistency.

Cosmetology and Esthetics Program Comparison

Pros Of Esthetics

1. Focused Specialization

If you are passionate about skincare, esthetics allows you to focus deeply on:

  • Skin health
  • Facial treatments
  • Acne solutions
  • Anti-aging services
  • Makeup artistry

For students who love skincare science, this specialization can feel more aligned.

2. Shorter Program Length (In Many States)

Esthetics programs often require fewer training hours than cosmetology. That can mean:

  • Faster entry into the workforce
  • Lower overall tuition
  • Quicker licensing

Always confirm your state’s required hours.

3. Growing Demand In Skincare

The skincare and self-care industries continue to grow. Licensed estheticians may work in:

  • Spas
  • Med spas
  • Dermatology offices
  • Specialty skincare studios

For students interested in clinical-style environments, esthetics can be appealing.

Cons Of Esthetics

1. Narrower Service Scope

Esthetics licenses typically do not allow:

  • Hair cutting
  • Hair coloring
  • Chemical hair services

If you later decide you want to work behind the chair as a stylist, you would need additional training.

2. Income Can Be Commission-Based

Like cosmetology, early income may depend on:

  • Client retention
  • Service pricing
  • Retail sales

Both paths require strong client relationship skills to grow long-term earnings.

Cosmetology and Esthetics Program Comparison

Licensing Differences

Both cosmetology and esthetics require:

  • Completion of a state-approved program
  • Passing a state board exam
  • Meeting sanitation and safety standards

However, required training hours vary by state and by license type.

Before choosing a path, review your state’s licensing requirements and confirm what each credential legally allows you to do.

Career And Income Considerations

Income in both fields depends heavily on:

  • Skill level
  • Location
  • Client retention
  • Business development
  • Marketing ability

Some professionals combine licenses over time to expand service offerings.

There is no universal “better” option. The stronger choice depends on your interest and long-term plan.

Cosmetology and Esthetics Program Comparison

Questions To Ask Yourself

  1. Do I enjoy working primarily with hair, or am I more interested in skin health?
  2. Do I want the broadest possible service flexibility?
  3. Am I looking to specialize quickly?
  4. Do I plan to eventually own a salon or spa?
  5. How much time can I realistically commit to training?

Your answers will often point clearly in one direction.

Questions when Touring Beauty School

Touring a beauty school is one of the most important steps in choosing the right program.

But many prospective students walk into a tour without knowing what to ask. Later, they realize they forgot to ask about tuition details, licensing preparation, class sizes, or what’s actually included in the program.

If you’re planning a campus visit, use this checklist to make sure you leave with real answers — not just impressions.

Why Asking The Right Questions Matters

A campus tour isn’t just about seeing the classrooms. It’s about understanding:

  • Whether the program prepares you for licensure
  • What your total investment will be
  • How much hands-on training you’ll receive
  • What kind of support you’ll have during and after school

Students who ask informed questions tend to make more confident decisions — and feel more prepared once classes begin.

Questions About Accreditation And Licensing

Start with the fundamentals.

Is The School Accredited?

Accreditation ensures the program meets specific educational standards. It can also affect:

  • Financial aid eligibility
  • Employer perception
  • Licensing qualification

Ask who accredits the school and what that means for you.

Questions when Touring Beauty School

Does The Program Meet State Licensing Requirements?

In most states, you must complete a certain number of training hours before sitting for your licensing exam.

Ask:

  • How many hours are required in this state?
  • Does this program fully prepare me for the state board exam?
  • What is the school’s state board pass rate?

Licensing preparation should be clear and structured.

Questions About Cost And Financial Planning

Tuition is one of the biggest decision factors.

What Is Included In Tuition?

Ask specifically:

  • Is the student kit included?
  • Are tools and supplies included?
  • Are there additional lab or product fees?
  • Are state board exam fees separate?

A transparent breakdown prevents surprises later.

You can also review Empire’s tuition and financing options before your visit to prepare financially informed questions.

Questions when Touring Beauty School

What Financial Aid Options Are Available?

If you qualify, you may be eligible for:

  • Federal financial aid
  • Scholarships
  • Payment plans

Ask how the financial aid process works and what documentation is required.

Questions About Daily Training And Classroom Experience

Beauty school is hands-on. You should understand how that experience works.

How Soon Do Students Work With Real Clients?

Real client experience builds confidence and technical skill.

Ask:

  • When do students begin working in the student salon?
  • How are services supervised?
  • How are students evaluated?

Hands-on experience is critical to long-term growth.

Questions when Touring Beauty School

What Is The Class Size?

Class size can impact:

  • Instructor attention
  • Feedback quality
  • Practice opportunities

Ask how many students are typically in each class and how instructors provide individualized support.

What Brands And Products Are Used?

If you’re serious about a beauty career, product exposure matters.

Ask:

  • What professional brands are used in training?
  • Are students exposed to modern coloring and styling techniques?
  • Do you teach business and retail strategies?

Your training should reflect real-world salon expectations.

Questions About Career Preparation

Graduation is not the end — it’s the beginning.

Does The School Offer Job Placement Support?

Ask about:

  • Resume assistance
  • Interview preparation
  • Employer partnerships
  • Alumni networking

Strong career support can accelerate your early career.

Do Students Learn Business Skills?

Technical skill alone is not enough. Ask whether the program covers:

  • Client retention
  • Pricing strategy
  • Booking systems
  • Social media marketing basics

Long-term income in beauty often depends on business knowledge.

Questions when Touring Beauty School

Insider Questions Most Students Forget To Ask

These questions often reveal the most:

  • How many hours per week will I attend?
  • What is the attendance policy?
  • What happens if I fall behind?
  • What does a typical day look like?
  • Can I speak to a current student?

These details help you understand daily expectations.

What To Look For During The Tour

Beyond questions, observe:

  • Are students actively working?
  • Is the environment clean and organized?
  • Are instructors engaged?
  • Do students seem supported?

Your experience on tour often reflects the culture of the program.

Preparing For Your Empire Tour

If you’re planning to visit an Ģý campus, bring this checklist with you.

Before your visit, you can:

  • Review the cosmetology or esthetics program pages
  • Explore tuition and financing information
  • Locate the campus nearest you

Arriving prepared allows you to focus on fit, not just features.

Choosing a beauty school is a professional decision.

The right questions help you evaluate:

  • Licensing readiness
  • Financial clarity
  • Training quality
  • Career preparation

A tour should leave you informed, not overwhelmed.

If you’re ready to see a campus in person, schedule a tour and bring your questions with you. The more prepared you are, the more confident your decision will be. Join a community, and enroll at , where your dreams become reality.

Cosmetology School Program Information

If you’re considering cosmetology school, it’s normal to wonder whether it’s hard — or whether you’ll be able to keep up with the demands.

Most people asking this question aren’t worried about passing a test. They’re worried about time, confidence, and whether they’ll feel overwhelmed once they start.

This article breaks down what students actually struggle with, what’s manageable, and what surprises most people once they’re in training.

Quick Answer

Cosmetology school is challenging because it’s hands-on and time-based, not because of difficult exams or heavy academics. Students who attend consistently, practice regularly, and use instructor feedback tend to progress successfully.

Cosmetology School Program Information

How Cosmetology School Works

Cosmetology programs are designed around hands-on learning. Training combines classroom instruction with supervised practice, allowing students to build skills gradually over time.

Rather than focusing on memorization, programs emphasize repetition, technique, and real-world application. This structure helps students gain confidence as they progress through training.

You can learn more about how hands-on training is structured through Empire’s cosmetology program here:
/programs/cosmetology

Cosmetology School Program Information

What Makes Cosmetology School Challenging

Cosmetology school isn’t difficult in a traditional academic sense, but it does require commitment and consistency. The challenge comes from showing up, practicing regularly, and learning through experience.

Some aspects feel demanding at first, especially for students new to hands-on learning environments.

Time Management And Consistency

Many students underestimate how important consistency is. Regular attendance and practice matter more than natural talent.

Balancing school with work or family responsibilities can be challenging, which is why planning a realistic schedule early makes a big difference.

Cosmetology School Program Information

Hands-On Learning From Day One

Most cosmetology training involves working with your hands for extended periods. Students spend time standing, practicing techniques, and developing muscle memory through repetition.

This can feel physically demanding early on, but it’s also how confidence and skill are built.

Working With Real Clients

Client interaction is a major part of cosmetology training. Students learn consultation skills, communication, and time awareness while working under supervision.

This can feel intimidating at first, but it’s an expected part of the learning process and improves with practice.

Cosmetology School Program Information

What Students Are Often Surprised By

Many students expect cosmetology school to feel like a traditional classroom. Instead, they’re surprised by how active and practical the experience is.

The biggest adjustment is often learning to stay consistent and patient while skills develop over time.

How Programs Are Designed To Support Students

Structured programs are built to support students as they progress. Instruction, feedback, and supervised practice are designed to help students improve steadily rather than all at once.

Students aren’t expected to be perfect — they’re expected to learn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cosmetology school harder than college?

Cosmetology school is different from college. It’s more hands-on and practical, with less emphasis on exams and more focus on skill development.

Do you need experience before starting cosmetology school?

No prior experience is required. Programs are designed to teach skills from the beginning.

What happens if you fall behind?

Instructors work with students to address challenges and help them stay on track.

Can you fail cosmetology school?

Like any training program, progress depends on attendance, participation, and effort. Staying engaged and communicating with instructors helps prevent issues.

Cosmetology school is challenging, but the challenge is manageable for students who understand what to expect and commit to the process. If you’re weighing whether cosmetology school fits your goals and schedule, talking with admissions can help clarify expectations before you enroll. Cosmetology School Program Information

If you’re exploring a career in cosmetology, you’ll usually come across two main paths: enrolling in cosmetology school or pursuing an apprenticeship.

Both options can lead to licensure, but they offer very different experiences. Most people comparing these paths are trying to figure out which option feels more stable, realistic, and supportive before committing.

This article breaks down how cosmetology school and apprenticeships differ, and what those differences mean in practice.

Quick Answer

Cosmetology school offers structured training, a predictable timeline, and built-in preparation for licensing exams. Apprenticeships vary widely depending on the salon and mentor. For most students, school-based training provides a clearer and more reliable path.

Cosmetology School Program Information

How Cosmetology School Works

Cosmetology programs follow a structured curriculum designed to meet state licensing requirements. Students move through hands-on training, supervised client work, and classroom instruction in a clear sequence.

This structure helps ensure students gain exposure to a wide range of services while receiving consistent guidance from instructors. You can learn more about how structured training works through Empire’s cosmetology program here:
/programs/cosmetology

Cosmetology School Program Information

How Apprenticeships Typically Work

Apprenticeships involve learning directly in a working salon. Training quality often depends on mentor availability, salon pace, and the services offered.

Because apprenticeships aren’t standardized, experiences can vary significantly. Some apprentices gain strong skills in certain areas while missing exposure in others, including licensing preparation.

Cosmetology School Program Information

Key Differences To Consider

Cosmetology school offers a guided curriculum, predictable training hours, and structured exam preparation. Apprenticeships rely heavily on the salon environment, often have variable timelines, and may offer less comprehensive preparation for licensing requirements.

Which Option Fits Different Learners

Cosmetology school often works best for students who want clear expectations, ongoing support, and a defined path to licensure. Apprenticeships may appeal to those who already have strong salon access and are comfortable navigating a less structured learning environment.

Cosmetology School Program Information

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an apprenticeship faster than cosmetology school?

Not always. Timelines vary depending on state requirements and salon structure.

Do apprenticeships prepare you for licensing exams?

Preparation varies by salon and mentor, which can affect readiness.

Is cosmetology school required in every state?

Most states require completion of an approved training program to qualify for licensure.

Can you switch from an apprenticeship to cosmetology school later?

Yes, though requirements and credit transfer depend on state rules.

Choosing between cosmetology school and an apprenticeship isn’t about which option is better. It’s about which path reduces uncertainty and fits your learning style. Join a community, enroll at where your dreams become reality.
